General Impression
Overall Rating:
/ 10Stacey and I have had an amazing time in Diani beach, Kenya. Edward picked us up from the airport in Mombasa and delivered us to Tabby the next day. We started our assignment at Mwakigwena primary school during the week and went back to Mombasa to meet up with Edward and attend a community event in the rural area. Everyone has been very welcoming and hospitable. The kids are very receptive and love the games and PE things we brought. At home Stacey teaches 2nd grade and I teach 1st so we have been placed accordingly. It seems easiest to teach art and PE because the other subjects have a set curriculum. Both Stacey and I have substituted for classes that had absent teachers, in which case we taught all subjects except for Kiswahili. We also did some small group activities, as you know overcrowding is a problem and teachers do not get the opportunity to do much small group work. Children never cease to amaze us with their curiosity and capacity to embrace new opportunities.
Tabby made is very easy to do weekend excursions. She arranged for us to go on safari at Tsavo east. We also stayed at a resort one of the weekends. We feel like we have had a very well balanced experience of work and play!
