I spent three incredible weeks in the Ashanti region of Ghana teaching English and Maths at a local village school. It was an absolute pleasure to travel at such an affordable cost to do the work that I love in such an exotic country that had always been my dream to visit!The majority of my time on the project was spent teaching a class of eight-nine year olds, all at different levels of schooling. Having worked before in a UK school where things are done differently, it took a bit of getting used to the Ghanaian approach to schooling and to life in general, where everyone seems so laid-back about everything. I began to question how anybody managed to get anything done with this mentality, but learnt to really appreciate them and their 'laid-back' way of doing life!
To me, there is nothing more rewarding than being in the classroom when a child is able to answer a question correctly on a subject that you've taught them, and for me to have been able to relay this information to them, coming from one culture to another made it that much more special!
Ghanaians are without a doubt the most welcoming, generous and the happiest and friendliest people that I have ever met. One of my fondest memories will be making the walk from my house to the road where i'd get a tro-tro to school; Each day being greeted by young smiling village children, waving and shouting "OBRONI!!!" No doubt I will be back!
Sally and the team are doing an incredible job here. I am so thankful to have been able to share this experience with them, and really recommend volunteering in Ghana! I shall definitely be going with Love Volunteers again.
