/ 10Simply put; my time in Morocco was the most humbling and rewarding experience of my life. My aims were to spend some time abroad helping the most vulnerable people in a developing country and to get some much-needed perspective in doing so.This was my first time volunteering abroad and Love Volunteers facilitated this with an efficient, professional and friendly service. All questions were answered promptly and the arrangements and information provided before the placement were all to a high standard.
My time at the orphanage was split between helping the handicapped and the young orphans. The first day was initially quite overwhelming and with the language barriers made it difficult to know how to contribute. However by the end of the first week I feel I settled in quite well and the nurses made good use of me. The work involved bathing, clothing and feeding the severely handicapped during the first few hours and later just supervising and playing with the young orphans.
The local coordinator and host family were very welcoming and provided lots of helpful tips and recommendations of how to spend my time in the city and country. Rabat itself is relatively small with only a few sights to see, but this added to its attractiveness to me, as there were not too many tourists and seemed a lot more peaceful and unspoilt than other cities.
The main point I would say is that the experience is what you make of it. The work requires you to be pro-active, but the more you give the more you will get. Whilst there is also plenty to enjoy in Rabat and the wider country should you wish to. This may have been my first experience volunteering abroad but I got so much from it that it will definitely not be my last. In all I would highly recommend Love Volunteers and volunteering in Morocco.
