/ 10Volunteering in Nepal was great! The city of Katmandu is amazing regarding the culture and way of living. It is a little dusty (almost no roads or sidewalks), so I suggest wearing a dust mask from day one. Everything else is just what you want from an experience like this. The people in the volunteer house have a big heart for what they do. They will take good care of you: facilities are comfy and the food delicious (more than enough).
The leaders, Keshab and Marooth, are well educated and very passionate. Great people. The atmosphere at the house is welcoming and interactions with fellow volunteers priceless. Getting around is easy, but I suggest get a map beforehand.
At the medical clinic where I volunteered most of my routine was observational only as I am pre-med, though they do allow those who have medical expertise to be more involved. I spent most of the time in the ER with nurses, but the doctors will walk you through the procedures and explain the cases. This was very helpful for me and I learned so much. I also had the chance to witness three surgeries!
Keep in mind that as a pre-med student you are not there to help. It is a Shadowing Program, so that is what you will do, observe and learn. If you understand your role you won't be disappointed with this program!
