/ 10This trip was actually my roommate, Lauren's idea. She had gone out to breakfast with my mom and I one morning and had told my mom about her summer plans. After breakfast my mom told me that I should look into and go with her. A month later my flights were booked and my program fee was paid. When I had decided to go to Kenya, I wasn't expecting anything. I wanted to go in with a clear mind and sort of hope for the best. After being there for 3 weeks, I don't think I could have asked for anything better. The children and teachers were so committed and hard working for the sole purpose of wanting to be there, not because they had to. After school most of the children would go work to help support their families. That just goes to show their dedication to really wanting to learn and grow, versus in the United States being required to go to school.
This trip truly did open my eyes and I would not have changed anything because it was the perfect way to begin my summer. I also continue to keep in contact with the teacher at the school, I taught 3rd grade, and am trying to figure out a way to help pay for a few of the kids' tuition for a little while, if not the whole year. The kids were so lively and really do deserve as much help and love as they can get. Their energy and determination truly inspired me and continue to do so.
